TGA Guide

That little number on the front of your sunscreen. Here's what it means and how to check it.

Every sunscreen sold in Australia needs to be listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods, or ARTG for short. When a product is listed, it gets a unique number that looks like this:

AUST L 388075

You'll find it printed on the front label of your sunscreen. The number tells you the product has been assessed and listed with the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), which is the government body that regulates therapeutic goods in Australia.

Two letters to know. AUST L is for listed medicines, which covers sunscreens and other lower-risk products. AUST R is for registered medicines, which go through a more detailed assessment. Sunscreens are almost always AUST L.

Where to find it on the pack

Look at the front label. The AUST L number is usually near the bottom, in small print but clearly visible. If you can't find it on the front, check the back, some brands print it there instead.

If there's no AUST number on the pack at all, that's a problem. Every sunscreen legally sold in Australia should have one.

How to check it's legitimate

You can look up any AUST number on the TGA's public database. Takes about 30 seconds.

  1. Find the number

Grab your sunscreen and find the AUST L number on the front label.

  2. Go to the TGA database

Click through to the ARTG search page (link in the button below).

  3. Enter the number

Type just the digits, for example 388075, into the search field and hit search.

  4. Check the details

The product name that comes up should match what's on your bottle.

  5. Want to see the ingredients?

Click "Download PDF" in the summary row. It lists all the active ingredients for that specific product.

got your sunscreen ready?

Why does this matter?

The AUST number links to a specific product. Its name, its SPF rating, what it's meant to be used for. It's how the TGA keeps track of what's on the market and can act quickly if there's ever an issue with a particular batch or formula.

It also means you can double-check that what you're buying is what you think it is. Handy if you're comparing products, or you just want to know what's going on your skin.

Common questions

Is Maxiblock TGA listed?

Yes. Every Maxiblock sunscreen carries an AUST L number and is listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods. You'll find the full list above, with numbers you can verify yourself on the TGA's public database.

What does AUST L mean on sunscreen?

AUST L is the prefix for listed medicines on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods. Sunscreens fall into this category. The letters and number together tell you the product has been assessed and listed with the TGA, Australia's regulator for therapeutic goods.

Are all sunscreens sold in Australia TGA listed?

They should be. Any sunscreen making a primary sun protection claim, the kind you'd buy for the beach, the school run, or a shift outdoors, is regulated as a therapeutic good and needs an AUST L number to be legally sold here. Cosmetic products with incidental SPF, like some tinted moisturisers, fall under different rules.

What's the difference between AUST L and AUST R?

AUST L covers listed medicines, which are lower-risk products assessed for safety and quality. Sunscreens sit here. AUST R covers registered medicines, which go through a more detailed assessment for both safety and efficacy. Different categories, different levels of assessment.

Where is the AUST L number on a Maxiblock sunscreen?

Front label. It's usually near the bottom of the pack. If you're comparing products in a shop or pharmacy, it's a quick check worth doing.
