Outbacker Sunscreen with Insect Repellent SPF 50+

£11.00

Sun protection that keeps the critters away:

  • UVA/UVB Broad-Spectrum SPF 50+ Protection
  • DEET insect repellent for mosquitoes and flies
  • 4 hours water resistant
Sun protection and bug repellent in one tube. Outbacker is an SPF 50+ sunscreen lotion with DEET-based insect repellent, so you're not juggling a sunscreen in one hand and a bug spray in the other.

Repels mosquitoes and flies for up to 2 hours. Water resistant sun protection for up to 4 hours. One application, one product, and you're out the door

Active constituents (sunscreen)

4-Methylbenzildene Camphor 40mg/g, Bemotrizinole 10mg/g, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane (Avobenzone) 50mg/g, Octocrylene 20mg/g. Active constituents (insect repellents)

Inactives

Aqua, Cocoglycerides, Cera Alba, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Dimethicone, Dipropylene Glycol Dibenzoate, Butylene Glycol, PEG-15 Cocamine, Parabens, 1-Hexadecene, PPG-15 Stearyl Ether Benzoate, PEG-40 Stearate, Phenoxyethanol, Parfum, Acrylates / C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Disodium EDTA, Tocopherol Acetate, BHT.
Does it feel sticky or greasy?

No. It's a lotion, rub it in and try to tell where it went.

Does it have a strong smell?

There's a slight scent from the DEET; that's the repellent doing its job. It fades once it dries down.

Can I use it on my face?

Yes, just avoid the eye area. Apply to your hands first, then spread onto your face rather than applying directly from the tube.

Do I need to reapply more often than regular sunscreen?

The sun protection is water resistant for up to 4 hours, but the insect repellent lasts around 2 hours. If the bugs are the bigger problem, reapply at the 2-hour mark. Either way, reapply after swimming or towelling off.

Is it okay for children?

This product contains DEET, so check the label for age guidelines. For kids who just need sun protection without the repellent, our Kinder sunscreen is the better option.

Can I just use bug spray over a regular sunscreen?

You can, but layering bug spray over sunscreen can reduce SPF effectiveness. A combined formula is designed so one doesn't undermine the other.

What insects does it repel?

Mosquitoes and flies. DEET is the most widely tested repellent recommended by Australian health authorities.

Is this only for camping and hiking?

It works anywhere the sun and the bugs turn up at the same time: fishing, barbecues, sports, gardening, work sites.

Broad spectrum SPF 50+ rating badge for Maxiblock Outbacker sunscreen with insect repellent

A bug repellent with a SPF

Outbacker has a broad spectrum SPF 50+ rating, printed on the front. And that's for the full formula, repellent and all.

Low-dose DEET that fits a habit you already have

DEET works by the clock. A higher percentage lasts longer, it doesn't necessarily protect better. So Outbacker keeps the dose low, around 7%, and leans on something you already do: reapplying your sunscreen every 2 hours.

  1. Rub it in

Sunscreen and repellent go on together, in one go.

  2. Get on with it

Covered for both while you're out in it.

  3. Top up

Same motion as your sunscreen. The repellent tops up with it.

  • Illustration showing sunscreen and insect repellent as separate products — DEET can reduce the SPF of sunscreen layered underneath

DEET is a solvent. Apply a repellent over sunscreen and the DEET can thin the layer underneath, dropping the SPF you started with.

  • Maxiblock Outbacker insect repellent sunscreen lotion 100mL tube — sunscreen and repellent in one formula

Outbacker's sun filters and repellent are formulated and tested as one. The SPF is measured with the DEET already in the mix, so what's on the label is what's on your skin.

One less thing to carry

One product instead of two means a lighter pack. For a day hike, a campsite, or a swag in the back of the troopy, that's one less thing to carry and one less thing left on the kitchen bench.

About the smell

DEET has a smell you'll know the moment you open a bottle, sharp and a bit chemical. We've run a fragrance through Outbacker to soften it, so you're not wearing the hardware-shed smell all afternoon. Worth knowing it is fragranced: if your skin reacts easily, our sensitive range is the gentler pick.
